On April 1, 1997, one day after purchasing the Grand Hotel, ZION closed on the financing to renovate the building at 1055 East State Street. The complete renovation cost $5.8 million and the results: Longwood Plaza Apartments – 65 high quality apartments for seniors with lower incomes. Caring on-site management organizes many activities monthly including trips to concerts and craft shows, pot lucks in the beautiful wood-paneled community room, parties and workshops.
In April 2001 and after over four years of very hard work and complex negotiations, ZION announced its winning of a $3.3 million grant for a unique and intense wellness program for Longwood residents. The program includes twice weekly nutrition classes, twice weekly exercise classes, thorough and frequent medical exams and supplemental funding for medical tests and prescriptions. A registered nurse with geriatric training helps each resident develop an individual wellness plan. Residents who stick with their plan are paid a $40/month participation incentive. Program goals include weight loss, smoking cessation, blood cholesterol lowering, greater strength and flexibility and cardiovascular improvements.
